Tsipras and Biden discuss Cyprus at Davos

Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras and US Vice President Joe Biden met informally on Wednesday on the sidelines of the Davos World Economic Forum.

According to an official announcement from Athens the two agreed that some sort of reinforcement of the already “positive dynamic” of the negotiations for a Cyprus solution could be possible. No further details were given by the Greek delegation at the Swiss alpine resort.

A statement from the prime minister’s office in Athens said  Tsipras and Biden agreed that a just and viable solution based on numerous UN resolutions, and also on the fact that Cyprus is a member-state of the EU should be reached.

Tsipras told Biden that the feeling of security for the all the people of Cyprus, Greek and Turkish Cypriots, could no longer be ensured “through the anachronistic  decrees of some guarantor powers”, namely Turkey, Greece and Britain.

Biden and the Greek Premier are said to have discussed a wide range of other matters, namely the economic situation in Greece, the EU refugee problem, the cooperation between Washington and Athens on bilateral issues but especially on energy matters, and also long lasting unsolved problem regarding the naming of the Former Yugoslavian Republic of Macedonia.
