Two arrested for drugs and injuring police officers (Update with remand)

Two men were arrested on Saturday night in the Famagusta area in connection with drugs possession and injuring two police officers.

The two, aged 21 and 24 were the subject of a routine traffic stop on a road in Paralimni but as police officers approached the vehicle on foot from the front but the suspects decided to try and make a break for it, hitting both police officers with the car before speeding off.

After calling for help, the two officers were taken by ambulance to the Famagusta general hospital. The male officer was treated for a fractured arm and the female officer for bruising on various parts of her body, and also for shock.

Back-up officers caught up with the suspects and found 2.5 grammes of cannabis in the car, and a precision scales.

Subsequent searches of their homes found a cannabis plant in the house of the 21-year-old plus two joints whole in the home of the second man they found one gramme of cannabis and three joints.

All were taken as evidence.

The pair were remanded for five days on Sunday.
