Apollon win Limassol derby

Apollon beat local rivals AEL 2-0 in the Cyprus football championship on Wednesday night, closing in on the three teams above them in the standings.

Luca Stojanovic opened the scoring after only seven minutes, with a Valentinos Sielis own goal with 20 minutes remaining wrapping up all three points as well as Limassol bragging rights.

Apollon stay in fourth place, just a single point behind defending champions APOEL, who were beaten at home by leaders AEK on Tuesday night.

Elsewhere on Wednesday, Anorthosis blew the chance to join AEK at the top of the table when they were held to a 1-1 draw at lowly Ethnikos Achnas.

The Famagusta outfit moved to 39 points, two behind AEK.

Also on Wednesday, Ermis enjoyed a 1-0 win in Paralimni, while bottom of the table Ayia Napa drew 2-2 with Nea Salamina.
