In inconsistency there is order

By Maria Gregoriou

Gallery Gloria in Nicosia will welcome us all on Friday at the opening of the solo exhibition Shapes and Colour by Zinon Sierepekli at 7.30pm.

Sierepekli is famous in the Cypriot art world for his contribution to architecture and photography. Most recently he showed what he can do when it comes to sculptures in the book Ekkremotites.

His most recent works balance themselves between paintings and printmaking, between sculpture and design, are filled with colour and ooze an erotic mood. The carvings on wood to be displayed during the exhibition illustrate Sierepekli’s subtle and humorous attitude, one which he uses to tackle any subject he turns his hand to.

The exhibition focuses on three themes. The first is nakedness, which is dominated by references to Modigliani, Matisse and to more local artists Paul Georgiou and Christoforos Savva.

The second theme is that of children, the fascinating drawings they produce and the child we all still carry around with us.

The third theme is an erratic mood which drives the artist to come up with a bunch of unconnected images that make up his memory. This erratic mood is in no way a negative thread to Sierepekli’s creative output, rather it is his true self, his strength and what brings his personality to the surface.
