Animal party wants mass neutering for strays

UP to 100 cats and dogs could be neutered every day in a bid to combat homeless animals, the Animal Party proposed on Wednesday in a meeting with Agriculture Minister Nicos Kouyialis.

Outlining 15 issues in a letter to Kouyialis, the party outlined the SPAYATHON project that aims at “large scale mass neutering” in a bid “to professionally address the urgent and longstanding problem of homeless dogs and cats,” the party said in a statement.

An international organisation is at the ready to start the project with vets offering their services for free, the party added, claiming the minister had a positive approach to their suggestion.

Also in the list of hot topics, the party stressed zoos as not as thoroughly inspected as they should, while “those who consistently breach the laws governing their operation s… on the welfare and protection of animals should have their license reviewed and revoked.”

It stressed the necessity of having zoos and pet shops inspected with wrongdoers subject to penalties.

The Animal Party’s letter to Kouyialis also outlined their disagreement over proposals for creating crocodile farms and dolphin parks.

“We say – don’t be part of the problem – be part of the solution,” the letter concluded.
