Post-mortem shows baby died in the womb

THE post mortem of the baby boy that was delivered stillborn on Friday night at the Paphos General hospital revealed that the cause of death was intrauterine foetal demise, it was announced on Monday.
Police told the Cyprus News Agency (CNA) that state pathologist, Angeliki Papetta, ruled that the baby’s death was caused by intrauterine foetal demise, the clinical term for a baby that has died in the womb. Tissue was also taken for further tests.
The baby was delivered on Friday night after its 23-year-old mother, who was seven months pregnant, was rushed to the Paphos General after bleeding. Doctors had tried to deliver the baby through a Caesarean section, but it had already died.
The 23-year-old’s attending gynaecologist Vassos Vassiliou told the CNA that great effort was taken to save the mother.
Vassiliou said that the young mother was transferred by ambulance to the hospital at around 10.15pm on Friday from the Polis hospital.
Vassiliou said she was bleeding so profusely that she needed five units of blood and three units of plasma “to be saved”. She presented placental abruption, Vassiliou said.
After the delivery, members of the Paphos police obtained the mother’s medical file for further investigation. According to the police the family have not filed a complaint for medical negligence.
