Palestinians and AKEL protest at Israeli embassy

PALESTINIANS living in Cyprus and members of AKEL marched to the Israeli Embassy in Nicosia on Friday to protest against the new cycle of violence that erupted in eastern Jerusalem and the West Bank.

The protesters held Palestinian flags and shouted slogans in Arabic and English against the Israeli occupation and in support of the Palestinian resistance. They also called for a free Palestine.

Stavros Yerolatsitis of AKEL’s central bureau said that the violence and turmoil have escalated “due to the policy of the Israeli authorities to overturn the status quo in the region of the Al-Aqsa mosque and to alter the character, legal status and demographics in the occupied Palestinian territories”.

“The attempt of the Israeli authorities to turn the Palestinian issue into a religious battle will not succeed,” Yerolatsitis said.

He also called for the tearing down of the “illegal wall that Israel erected in Jerusalem”.
