EAC pair to be suspended over ‘casino’ upgrade

THE Electricity Authority of Cyprus board has ordered the suspension of two employees who are suspected of tampering with and upgrading a meter in Pyla in an establishment destined as an illegal gaming house.

Following a board meeting on Tuesday night, it was decided the employees should be suspended for 30 days so as not to interfere with a disciplinary investigation the EAC chief has ordered.

According to the authority’s spokeswoman, Christina Papadopoulou, an investigation was launched last week by three Larnaca employees to gather evidence about the incident.

After reviewing the results of the investigation, the chief decided to launch a disciplinary probe which could take 30 days, reflecting the duration of time the two employees are suspended for.

The two employees were present with their lawyers at the meeting and in their defence said they had gone to change a bulb.

It was reported that the establishment, owned by a Turkish Cypriot whose meter was upgraded, was intended to operate as a casino.

“Following the reports, the EAC, accompanied by a UN patrol, went to the establishment and removed the illegal upgrade,” Papadopoulou said.
