Water pipeline from Turkey operational

A PIPELINE bringing water from Turkey to the occupied areas in Cyprus is complete, Turkish paper Milliyet reported.

Flowing from Mersin to Kyrenia, water is now pumping through the 250km underwater pipeline to the shores but will not be used until the pipe’s interior is cleaned.

Speaking to Milliyet, environment minister Kutlu Evren said this would bring a wave of investment and boost agriculture.

Branding it as “peace water”, he expressed his willingness to share it with government controlled areas in Cyprus.

The water from Turkey is expected to meet demand for the north for the next 50 years with 75 million cubic meters of water per year, the report said.
