And now, more strikes from your local Cyta union

A TRADE union representing workers in state telecoms Cyta is planning industrial action, including possible strikes, against the coming privatisation of the company.

At a congress held on Thursday, the PASE-ATIK union was given the green light to fight against Cyta’s privatisation.

The union’s members comprise employees from all sectors of Cyta. According to the union’s website, its members currently amount to 850, representing around 35 per cent of the total number of Cyta staff.

Union head Alekos Tryfonides said that on Friday members will be formulating an ‘action plan’ against privatisation.

The union was also considering legal action against the state, he added.

It believes the privatisation of Cyta is illegal and unconstitutional.

The announcement of the measures came on the same day that the government bill to privatise Cyta was tabled in parliament.

Under the bill a new, private telecoms company is to be created, with all the shares initially held by the state, who will seek investors. The new company will exist in parallel with the ‘old’ Cyta.
