Staying cool in the city

By Maria Gregoriou

For those still in Nicosia, there is no need to fret, there are still things to do and things to see, you just have to look a little deeper than usual to find an event worth leaving the comfort of your air-conditioning for.

The Constantia Open-Air Cinema offers a run of screenings under the stars and this week there might just be something for everyone.

Starting tomorrow, those who missed the screening of the 2013 sci-fi drama The Congress at the beginning of the month will get a second chance.

The film stars Robin Wright playing herself – or a Hollywood version of herself – as an actress who once held great promise, receiving an unexpected offer in mid-life: Mirramount Studios want to scan her entire being into their computers and purchase ownership of her image for an astronomical fee.

After she is scanned, the studio will be allowed to make whatever films it wishes with the 3D Robin. But that is not all, the studio promises to keep the new 3D Robin forever young in the movies.

Thursday moves from sci-fi to drama with the 2014 film Three Windows and a Hanging.

The drama zooms into a village forced to come to terms with the raping of women by Serb forces during the Kosovo war. It was awarded with the first prize in the Cyprus Film Days Festival 2015.

On Friday the Greek comedy drama Harisma will be screened.

Harisma concentrates on Ismini, a woman in her early 30s. She is cultivated and sensitive but is unable to feel emotion as she has developed a system to protect herself from emotions. It is exactly when she thinks that she has perfected her system that, Haris – who is aggressive and very passionate – enters her life.
