Tucked away in Ayios Omologites sits the unassuming Granazi Art Space, a relaxing, rustic venue attracting all ages and genres of people to hang out. Offering an assortment of beverages, art and music, the venue does its ‘chillaxed’ best, to bequeath culture, entertainment and liquid intoxications. It is subtle and authentic. One can feel comfortable frequenting it with either a small group of friends, a noisier birthday crowd or simply, on one’s own enjoying enticing company. I was pleasantly surprised to witness front row tables of men and women sipping away alone happily to the night’s show.
When Thursday night arrived, I was ready for some good live music washed down with a tasty liquid hit, after all the weekend was stumbling dangerously close. Accompanied by an assorted group of friends and acquaintances, we troubled bar staff into pulling together several tables and chairs in their pleasant garden space. They complied without a single whine or sour scowl – a good start to the night.
The space itself, although barely recognisable as a bar from the outside, is split into four main areas. Inside is a cosy room with a small bar, and photographs/local art adorning the walls. Here, artists have an opportunity to promote and sell their work monthly. Turning the corner, a smaller more personal space facilitates unobserved lovers, close friends or someone in need of quiet.
The main area opens up into a semi outdoor space with high seating and tables, which opens out further into an open yet private garden space with a courtyard feel. Like Dr Who’s Tardis, it’s bigger than what initially meets the eye.
As a whole, Granazi is pleasant; its layout and furniture embraces its inner ethnic chic. It is simple and effective with a surprisingly cool breeze filtering into its secluded garden.
As the night picks up, the space fills. A €5 entrance is charged on gig nights, which occur up to three times a week. It’s worth every cent. Housing musical talents including the Amalgamation project, Sound of Thieves and Ethnic Jazz ensemble, the musicians only serve to heighten the atmosphere.
With the music pending, I turn my attention to the menu. Again, it is uncomplicated yet interesting. At €6.50 I experiment with a Grenall’s; gin infused with rosemary, star anise, cinnamon sticks and nutmeg. It was tasty, subtle and sounded like it was good for me; success. Some other alluring options included gin with cucumber and sage leaves, or basil, orange peel and orange bitters, as well as familiar Brandy Sour, Amaretto Sour, Old Fashioned, Negroni and good old Pimms. Cocktails were averagely priced between €6.50-8. Beers and wines are served too. Overall, the music sang, drinks flowed and a good night was had by all.
