Tenders to develop old Larnaca airport by year-end

A CALL for tenders for development projects at the old Larnaca airport is expected to be called by the end of this year, according to Transport ministry permanent secretary Alecos Michaelides.

“Hermes (Airports) has hired consultants that have experience in advising other airports” where they are expected to hand back concrete information to the operator as to “what kind of developments can be made there,” he said.

The developments could be a shopping mall or any other commercial entity that has yet to be decided, Michaelides said, but not as an airport terminal.

Hermes is responsible for the airports until 2031 when they will be returned to the government, he added. The tenders will submit their applications either to Hermes or the transport ministry, “we don’t mind which,” however they will be reviewed together.

At the moment, they do not know if any buildings will be demolished for the development to go ahead.
