Former auditor-general Spyros Christou dies aged 76

Former Auditor-general Spyros Christou died on Friday aged 76, for reasons not yet announced.

Born in Morphou on December 12, 1938 he went to the United Kingdom for further education where he became a Chartered Certified Accountant.

He was arrested and imprisoned early in 1958 by British colonialists for his active participation in the EOKA liberation struggle from 1955-1959.

Working in the public service for 42 years, he was auditor-general from July 1997 until December 1988 while he served as an assistant auditor-general for 20 years before that.

His funeral will be held on Sunday, August 9 at 4:30pm at the Apostolos Andreas church in Aglandjia.

Current Auditor General Odysseas Michaelides and all staff at the state audit office have expressed their deepest condolences to his friends and family.
