UCY’s global ranking rises

The University of Cyprus (UCY) has moved up the list of 1,000 top universities worldwide, which was published by the Centre for World University Rankings (CWUR).

For 2015, UCY was in 928th position compared with 953rd position last year. It is the only Cypriot university on the list.

According to an announcement on Tuesday from UCY, the CWUR model is based on indicators which measure the quality of students` education and training, the credentials of the academic staff and the quality of research.

Universities are evaluated in eight categories: the quality of education, graduate employment, the quality of personnel, publications, influence, references, broad impact and patents.

The UCY announcement said it had developed important research programmes and in recent years it had secured significant funding for research. It also has a strong presence on the international and European research scene.

The University participates in 128 EU research projects and other externally funded projects, with total funds amounting to € 7.57m for 2014. The University has I recent years quadrupled its funding for research. Special reference was also made to the development of the Medical School.
University of Cyprus Rector Constantinos Christofides said the goal was that UCY be ranked among the top global 500 by 2020. (CNA)
