AKEL leader would visit Turkey if asked

MAIN opposition party AKEL announced on Tuesday it would accept a possible invitation from Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu to discuss the settlement of the Cyprus problem.

AKEL responded to Cavusoglu’s intentions, which were stated in an interview published in Milliyet on Tuesday that he planned on inviting the leftist party’s leader Andros Kyprianou to Ankara.

Even though no such invitation was extended, the party said, if such a call is received, “AKEL’s general secretary will respond positively to convey the standing principled positions of the Greek Cypriot side on the Cyprus settlement as set by the National Council, ” said an announcement.

At the interview, Cavusoglu also called President Nicos Anastasiades “his personal friend” and said that Anastasiades was determined to reach a solution.
