Limassol fire under control

A FIRE in a Limassol residential area that threatened to burn houses was placed under control late on Friday, the Fire Service said.

The blaze started in a car spare parts warehouse shortly before 3pm, incinerating the structure and causing the roof to collapse.

Twenty-five firemen aboard seven fire engines rushed to the scene and battled the flames for several hours, before managing to put it out late at night.

Although the fire initially prompted fears of spreading to nearby houses, the Fire Service’s swift response neutralised the threat and none were affected.

The warehouse will be guarded until Saturday, when investigations to establish the cause of the fire will be conducted.

According to a police spokesman, one of the warehouse’s owners, a 40-year-old man, had been in the building when the fire broke out and tried to put it out with a single extinguisher, only to sustain mild burns and be rushed to the Limassol General, where he was treated and released.

A fireman was also taken to the hospital as a precaution, after he reported feeling noxious because of fume inhalation.
