Baghdatis back from the brink in superb win

Marcos Baghdatis is through to the third round at Wimbledon after producing a stunning comeback from two sets to love down to beat Australian qualifier John Millman 6-7(5) 2-6 6-3 6-2 6-4 .

The Cyprus star, now ranked 54, was broken while serving for the first set at 5-4, the sixth break of serve in the opener.
He saved two set points in the tiebreak but Millman eventually took it after a lengthy one hour and 10 minutes of play.

The second set went with serve until Millman broke at 2-2. He then grabbed the insurance of a double break as he wrapped up the set 6-2 in a much more sprightly 35 minutes.

Things got even worse at the beginning of the third, with Baghdatis broken in the opening game. But Millman’s advantage didn’t last long as the 30-year-old broke back in the fourth game to level the scores at 2-2.
He then broke again to take a 5-3 lead and this time didn’t stumble when serving for the set.

There was a role reversal at the beginning of the fourth set with Baghdatis breaking Millman in the opening game. He broke again to take a 4-1 advantage and served out the set 6-4 to tie the match at two sets all.

The Cypriot broke early again in the fifth and held serve all the way to the finish line as he recorded a memorable victory after three hours and 43 minutes on Court 12.

Baghdatis will now play Belgium’s 16th seed David Goffin, who beat British wildcard Liam Broady.

Broady, one of four home players through to the second round of the men’s singles for the first time since 2006, stayed with Goffin in the opening set but could not maintain the pace in searing heat and went down 7-6(3) 6-1 6-1.
