Crossing at Dherynia will open first

A CROSSING at Dherynia is expected to open before the one at Lefka, the breakaway regime’s ‘interior minister’ Teberruken Ulucay revealed on Tuesday.

Earth-moving works at the two locations are already underway, and the road at the Dherynia crossing point would be cleared by next week, Ulucay told the north’s Bayrak radio station.

Work at Lefka would take more time, he added, because widening the road there would require clearing the area of mines.

The opening of two new crossings – one in Lefka in the west, and one in Dherynia, in the east – was decided by the leaders of the two communities on May 28, as part of confidence-building measures, parallel to the core reunification talks.

The leaders also cited a number of other proposed crossing points.

Currently, there are seven crossings in place.
