Cooler summer on the cards

The usually blistering heat of the island is expected to fall by a couple of degrees this summer and likely to be accompanied by occasional thunderstorms according to Met service forecasts for the rest of June, July and August.

Inland mean maximum temperatures are generally 33 – 36 degrees Celsius whereas coastal areas are usually between 30 and 32 degrees, according to met officer A, Filippos Tymvios. The drop for this summer is expected to be one or two degrees in some areas, he said.

It is also very likely that despite “relatively normal” temperatures, there will be occasional thunderstorms during afternoon hours.

Specifically, in June the “temperature will be generally normal” while humidity on average is expected to range from 50 to 75 per cent.

Across most of the island, temperatures will also remain within the average during July. However it could be 1C or 2C cooler further east with high humidity.

August temperatures are also expected to be 1C or 2C below average except in westernmost areas where temperatures will fall within normal parameters. Humidity is expected to be between 50 and 75 per cent.
