Getting to know yourself

By Maria Gregoriou

Playwright Oscar Wilde said that youth is wasted on the young, and we all know that the witty Irish man had plenty to say but sometimes – just sometimes – youth is what makes the young shine.

Such is the case when it comes to the ninth annual stage production that the Rising Star Youth Theatre of Limassol will be putting on next weekend.

The group of youths from six to 18-years-old will be performing The Breakfast Club based on the iconic 1985 John Hughes film. That makes this year the 30th anniversary since the release of the film (which has been ranked as one of the most favourite high school films of all time.)

This year the stage will tell the tale of five high school students as they arrive at school at 7am on a Saturday morning for Saturday detention. At the start of the day the students see themselves as others see them, as a genius, as an athlete, as a basket case, a princess and a criminal. But as the day progresses so does their perception of their selves as they begin to realise that these labels have nothing to do with who they really are. They also find they really have nothing in common with each other on a deeper level.

The story is one of a coming of age, of self-discovery and of a journey we all take towards understanding the world around us and the part we play in it.

The Rising Star production includes over 30 young people from Limassol who come from many different cultural backgrounds.
