MPs to abolish antiquated law that stipulates jail for promoting strikes

GREEN Party leader Giorgos Perdikis has submitted a proposal to abolish an antiquated colonial law that allows up to five years in prison for organising strikes.

He submitted the legislation on Wednesday to the House legal affairs committee.

Legal authorities agreed with the suggestion and are now awaiting the opinion of the labour ministry to continue discussions, committee chairman Soteris Sampson said.

The law said a person or an organisation suggesting or planning a strike, printing and sharing leaflets or writing articles promoting a strike were liable for the punishment. Perdikis said he was pleased that all MPs were supportive of the move to abolish the law.
