Fifth men held over Ayia Napa rape

The Famagusta District Court on Saturday ordered the two-day remand of a 38-year-old man from Limassol in connection with the alleged abduction and rape of a 30-year-old British woman in Ayia Napa last Saturday.

Four more suspects are being held in connection with the case, and on Tuesday the case file will be forwarded to the state’s Legal Service for a decision on which of the suspects will be charged.

In police line-ups the woman identified some of the suspects but not others.

She had been intoxicated during the alleged incident, while coroner Sofoclis Sofocleous found no evidence of physical abuse.

A police spokesman said the results of DNA testing on the woman and the suspects are expected from the Nicosia Institute of Genetics and Neurology.

Famagusta CID continues to investigate the case.
