Theocharous denies 2018 presidential ambitions

DISY MEP Eleni Theocharous has denied reports that she would be running for president in 2018, saying that she would only consider doing so if there were a Cyprus state.

Daily Alithia reported on Saturday that during an interview with Radio Proto on Friday the MEP announced her candidacy for 2018.

“I did no such thing,” the MEP told the Sunday Mail. “I was pretty clear and specific. If there is still a Cyprus state in 2018 then I might consider running. That’s all I said,” Theocharous responded, adding that she was misquoted.

The MEP has been highly critical of the administration, despite the fact that her own party is in power. Back in March Theocharous wrote on her Facebook page that Cyprus “is crumbling from within” and that the people now are not living in a democracy.

“I think it’s time to restructure our country, get rid of those who are tainted and stand passionately behind a political system that is free of corruption,” wrote the MEP, adding that the Cyprus problem was “on a slippery slope that leads to dangerous paths.”

Theocharous had concluded her statement saying that it was time for a new political movement, although later clarified that she was not necessarily interested in leading that movement.
