A YOUNG man from Paphos was sentenced by Paphos District Court on Friday to a €1,200 fine for possession of a small bag of cannabis.

The 19-year old was arrested on November 6, 2013, when driving his car with two friends inside. Police found the small bag in his possession while he admitted that he gave two cigarettes to his friends.

Judge Giorgos Vlamis explained that the sentencing was lenient because the boy had admitted to the crime, he had a clean record, the fact that he expressed sincere regret and promised to be more careful in the future and that he had a difficult childhood.

According to a report by Welfare Services, the 19-year old is the guardian of his underage sister.

The defence lawyer argued that the 19-year old would lose his job if he was sent to jail and that at the moment of his arrest he was unemployed.
