The Cyprus Institute of Neurology and Genetics (CING) announced on Friday that it had made arrangements to collect and properly dispose of expired or unwanted pharmaceuticals.

Disposal of pharmaceuticals in domestic waste bins, or poured down the drain, are an environmental hazard, the institute said, since they are chemical, non-biodegradable compounds that remain in the soil and groundwater for long periods of time contributing significantly to environmental contamination.

Members of the public are urged to place their expired or unwanted pharmaceuticals in the special bins installed in the CING’s patients’ waiting rooms and pharmacy.

“Collected pharmaceuticals will be disposed of in a way to ensure maximum environmental protection,” the announcement said.

The initiative is part of the institute’s and of the Cyprus School of Molecular Medicine’s environmental and social responsibility actions.
