Two brothers and wife of one arrested in drugs haul

Two brothers from Limassol, 33 and 30, both of whom reportedly work at the British bases, along with a woman, were arrested on Friday afternoon, after police found over 28 kilos of narcotics in their possession, police said.

According to the police report, drug squad officers received an anonymous tip saying that the brothers would receive a large quantity of drugs.

Police staked out the roads leading to the village where the 33-year-old lived and spotted his brother driving to his home. Officers followed the suspect and once he parked his car in front of the house they tried to arrest him.

The 30-year-old tried to evade capture by driving away but was stopped. In his attempt to flee the suspect ran into two police cars injuring one of the officers on the scene. The officer was rushed to the Limassol General Hospital where he is currently being treated.

A search of the 30-year-old’s car yielded 26.1 kg of cannabis, 1.3 kg cannabis resin and 1.16 kg of methamphetamine known by the name “crystal ice”.

The 33-year-old brother rushed to his residence where he was arrested. He denies any involvement in the crime.

Police also searched the 33-year-old’s home, in the presence of his 31-year-old wife, and found 480 grammes of cannabis resin in his bedroom drawer. The woman was also arrested.

The Cyprus News Agency reported that both brothers work for the British bases at Akrotiri. The 33-year-old is reported to be a police officer while the 30-year-old works at the base health services.
