Court escape

A 36-year-old Turkish national, held in connection with burglary and theft, managed to escape briefly on Friday after a court hearing in Limassol.

The man pushed the officers guarding him and jumped around five metres out the court’s first-floor window.

A large police force immediately closed off the area and started a search, catching the suspect 15 minutes later on Parthenonos Street.

The man was arrested on April 15 in Nicosia. DNA tests linked him to 19 burglaries in Limssol since 2007.

Police believe he carried out the break-ins and then escaped to the Turkish-occupied areas in the north.

On Friday, the court set the date of his trial for May 5. He will remain in custody until then.
