Body mix up in Karpasia funeral

A 93-YEAR-OLD GREEK Cypriot woman who died in the north was given for burial to the family of a Turkish Cypriot, it emerged on Monday.
Reports said the hospital mixed up the dates of the funerals and gave the body of Maroulla Liasi, who lived in Ayia Triada on the Karpas peninsula, to the family of Ayse Tekel, 87.
Tekel’s family went ahead with the burial without noticing the mistake.
It was discovered on Sunday when Liasi’s family went to the hospital to collect the body ahead of her funeral.
Reports said Liasi was exhumed and is now expected to be buried on Tuesday at 11.30am.
Maroulla Liasi is the mother of Yiannakis Liasi, who had been missing since the 1974 Turkish invasion.
His remains were buried in Ayia Triada last year after they were identified using DNA testing.
Liasi had been living in Ayia Triada since the island was divided in 1974.
