UNSG’s Special Advisor to be received by President on Tuesday

President of the Republic Nicos Anastasiades will receive on Tuesday morning UNSG`s Special Advisor for Cyprus, Espen Barth Eide, who returns tomorrow to Cyprus to continue his contacts regarding a possible resumption of the Cyprus talks this Spring.

CNA has learnt that the Greek Cypriot side, which suspended its participation in the negotiations last October, following a violation of its Exclusive Economic Zone by Turkey, will wait to be informed by Eide about the state of affairs and Turkey`s actions, before making any decisions for a possible resumption of the Cyprus talks.

In addition, the same sources told CNA that in case the talks resume and Turkey violates again Cyprus` EEZ, the Greek Cypriot side will have no other option than to suspend its participation to the talks once more.

The government believes that the fact that Eide is coming to Cyprus the day Turkey`s illegal NAVTEX expires, demonstrates the real reason for the suspension of the Cyprus talks.

The UN announced late March that Eide will return to Cyprus on Monday, 6 April “to follow up on the encouraging indications received during his last trip to the island regarding a possible resumption of the negotiations`.

Eide will meet bilaterally with the Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot leaders (Cyprus President Nicos Anastasiades and Turkish Cypriot leader Dervis Eroglu) “to continue discussions on prospects for the resumption of talks in the spring,” the press release said.

It was also noted that the Special Adviser continues to be optimistic about the prospects for a return to structured, results-oriented negotiations, and looks forward to this visit as an important step towards renewing the momentum in the talks.
