‘Lights out’ on Saturday night for Earth Hour

Cyprus joins 162 countries all over the world in the global campaign ‘Earth Hour, switching off lights for an hour, at 8.30pm in Saturday night for an hour to raise awareness for the effects of climate change.

The main event will be hosted, like every year, at the Presidential Palace, in the presence of President Nicos Anastasiades. On Friday the House Environment Committee hosted a meeting in with students who exchanged views and opinions with MPs on climate change. Events are also being organised by local authorities, schools, organisations and institutions islandwide.

All the countries around the world which participated in the campaign want to send global leaders and policy makers the message that action needs to be taken immediately to minimise the effects of climate change on the environment.

Earth Hour campaign began in 2007 led by a small group of active citizens in Australia and today is one of the most important environmental events globally. Cyprus joined the campaign in 2008. (CNA)
