Seven years for co-op robber

A 43-year-old man has been jailed for seven years for robbing a Larnaca co-operative bank on Christmas Eve last year.

Demetris Demetriou from Limassol pleaded guilty to robbing the Solidarity Co-op in Tersefanou using a fake gun.

Demetriou got away with €5,540 but was arrested a few hours later along with his partner, 40, who has denied involvement.

She had gone into the bank a few minutes before. The defendant came in as the door opened to let her out.

Police retrieved €3,977.

The man has a history of psychological problems and drugs use.

He also has prior convictions: he was jailed for 12 months in 2009 for burglary and in 2011 he got a three-month suspended sentence for theft.
