A triangle of greats

By Maria Gregoriou

Opus 39 Gallery in Nicosia will still be offering the chance to view a group drawing, silkscreen and sculpture exhibition by three renowned Cypriot artists of the 30s.

The three artists, who contributed greatly to the art world of Cyprus and abroad, are Stelios Votsis, Nikos Dymiotis and Lefteris Economou.

Votsis, from Larnaca, is considered to be one of the leading figures of modern art on the island and was a co-founder of the Cyprus Chamber of Fine Arts.

His paintings are best described as displaying a structural abstraction.

Dymiotis was a sculptor and one of his most famous works is Mother and Child, made from bronze in 1983.

Economou first appeared on the art scene in 1952, when he took part in a group exhibition in London.

Throughout his career he experimented with different techniques and advanced his avant-guard techniques, while very firmly sticking to the realist tradition when it came to portraits.

Works by all three artists are brought together to illustrate the sensitivity and originality of each artist.
