Fishermen held in north to appear in court

FOUR fishermen, a Greek Cypriot, 33, and three Egyptian crewmen, arrested on Thursday off the north western coastline by Turkish Cypriot police, were remanded in custody for 15 days on Friday.

According to a Cyprus News Agency (CNA) report, the four fishermen will appear before the court in occupied Nicosia.

The men were fishing off Kokkina in the St Raphael trawler when they were approached by the Turkish military in a small vessel and arrested for entering ‘Turkish Cypriot waters illegally’.

They were taken to Kokkina and later to Limnitis and interrogated at a police station. The 33-year old called his family from Limnitis on Thursday, to inform them that they have been questioned and that they would be taken to court for a remand hearing .

The UN has been informed, CNA said.
