UCY ‘fully green’ by 2016

The University of Cyprus (UCY) aspires by 2016 to become the first university in the world that is fully non-dependent on conventional electricity, it said on Thursday.

With the completion of the ‘Apollon’ photovoltaic park, the university will be solely dependent on the sun for energy, the announcement said.

“We wish to rank UCY among the best universities in the world relative to its functionality and its environmental consciousness,” the university’s rector Constantinos Christofides said.

He added that the university aimed at balanced economic development in harmony with nature.
