UNSC to vote on UNFICYP mandate renewal on January 28

The United Nations Security Council resolution for the renewal of the mandate of UNFICYP – the UN peace keeping force in Cyprus – will be put to a vote on January 28.

On January 26 the members of the UNSC will be briefed by the UNSG Special Adviser on Cyprus Espen Barth Eide on the latest developments regarding the Cyprus problem.

President of the UNSC Christián Barros Melet told press that on January 21 he is scheduled to have meetings with representatives from countries that contribute to UNFICYP.

The members of the Security Council have not yet received the Secretary General’s report on UNFICYP and diplomatic sources believe that the delay is due to various behind the scenes discussions for the resumption of the negotiations on the Cyprus problem.

UNFICYP is one of the longest-running UN Peacekeeping missions. It was set up in 1964. Its mandate is renewed on a six monthly basis.
