Roads leading to Troodos now open

The roads leading up to Troodos are now open for cars fitted with snow chains or four-wheel drives according to a police statement.

Director of Traffic Headquarters Yiannakis Charalambous however urged drivers to be extremely cautious as there are patches of (black) ice on the roads making them very slippery.

The Pan-European Youth Forum for Road Safety vice chairman Marios Stavrou has urged inexperienced drivers not to attempt driving up to the mountains.

He said that on a wet road the distance required for a car to come to a complete standstill is usually twice that of when driving on a dry road.

In case of emergency drivers should call 199.

A deterioration of the weather is expected as of Monday, with showers, thunderstorms and very strong winds. Snow is also expected to fall in the lower regions by Wednesday.
