A minute with Andreas Krassas Professional Judoka who has just won a silver medal in the Commonwealth Games

Where do you live?
I live alone in Boston, Massachusetts, where I am studying at Northeastern University.

Best childhood memory?
When I won my first judo competition at the age of five and was awarded the gold medal by my grandfather who was a undefeated Greco Roman wrestling champion and my biggest inspiration.

Most frequented restaurant and absolute favourite dish?
When I’m in Boston, I love going to Mistral and getting the duck. In Cyprus I go for a traditional tavern, usually Militzhis or Roushias in Larnaca.

What food would you really turn your nose up to?
One of the dishes I don’t like just by looking at it is Steak Tartare.

What did you have for breakfast?
Today I had three scrambled eggs, two slices of wholegrain bread with cheese and a bowl of fruit.

Would you class yourself as a day or night person?
It depends on the time of the year. When I’m training hard I wake up early and sleep relatively early on weekdays. On the weekends I tend to go to bed a bit late and sleep in most of the morning.

What’s your idea of the perfect night/day out?
A perfect way to start the day is with some judo training then a swim at the beach followed by a nice meal for lunch and a nap in the afternoon.
Later on it’s time to party with friends…

Best book ever read
Fooling Some of the People all the Time by David Einhorn. It was really interesting to read how some people were able to deceive others by cloaking the truth and kind of blaming it all on miscommunication.
It made me realise that deceit is everywhere around us and definitely made me more wary of cheaters.

Favourite film of all time and why?
Training Day (2001) with Denzel Washington and Ethan Hawke. Denzel Washington’s performance is unmatched in that film and no matter how many times I watch it, it never ceases to amaze me.

Best holiday ever taken? What’s your dream trip?
One of the most memorable holidays I’ve ever taken was in the United States with my family when I was 12. We visited Miami, New York and Orlando.
I’ve been travelling for so many years especially for judo competitions and have been to more than 30 countries, so I don’t really feel like any destination in the world would be a dream trip but there are some places in the Caribbean I would like to see and I really want to visit Costa Rica soon.

What music are you listening to in the car at the moment?
Hip Hop and RnB mostly.

What is always in your fridge?
Fruit, Yogurt, Juice

Dream house: rural retreat or urban dwelling? Where would it be, what would it be like and why?
Hmm… I guess I can go a bit crazy on this one.
Huge mansion, hanging off a cliff with a lot fast cars, helicopter pad, indoor and outdoor pool, indoor basketball court, indoor shooting range, big weightlifting room, private cinema and a martial arts room to train in with all my friends.

If you could pick anyone at all (alive or dead) to go out for the evening with, who would it be?
I would definitely pick my grandfather Andreas Tricomitis who died when I was about ten years old. Everyone who knew him says that he was very wise, so I would really like to sit down and talk with him about life in general since I never got the chance to have that kind of conversation with him when I was little.

If the world is ending in 24 hours what would you do?
I would make sure that the people I really care about know that I love them and spend as much time as I can with them.
Then I would probably skydive so that I have one of the best seats in the house to see everything come to an end.

What is your greatest fear?
I’m afraid of having a normal life, I really want to achieve something significant, something that everyone will be talking about for years. I want to achieve greatness.

Tell me a joke…
Children in the back seat can cause accidents. Accidents in the back seat can cause children.
