Reservoirs only 37 per cent full

WATER LEVELS in the island’s reservoirs are drastically lower than last year, according to water department officials.

Senior official at the Water Development Department Andreas Manolis told the Cyprus News Agency on Thursday that total reservoir capacity is at 37 per cent, much lower than the 73 per cent it was at the same day last year.

He further noted that dams connected to the southern pipeline in the water system, considered the most important of them all, are only at 25 per cent capacity, compared to 66 per cent last year.

Specifically, the island’s biggest dam, Kouris, which has a total capacity of 115,000 million cubic metres (mcm), is currently 29.4 per cent full, compared to 77.3 per cent for the same period last year.

Asprokremmos, with a total capacity of 52,375 mcm is 68.0 per cent full, compared to 93.7 per cent last year. The third largest reservoir, Evretou is 66.8 per cent full compared to 88.4 per cent last year, while Kannaviou dam is 60.8 per cent full compared to 85.4 per cent the year before.
