FROM SECRET, little known stretches of coast off the beaten track to a full list of all facilities offered by blue flag beaches, a comprehensive new guide to the beaches of Limassol district could help to brighten up what is promising to be a long, relentless summer.
‘The 33 Beaches of the Limassol District’ is a guide to Limassol’s coastline stretching from Governor’s to Pissouri and provides detailed descriptions of the Limassol coast including the geology and morphology of each of the beaches plus a customised map showing how to get to each one.
Author, Andreas Papadopoulos, said that he had been urged to write the book by Limassol Mayor Andreas Christou, after he saw Papadopoulos’ ‘The 44 Beaches of the free Famagusta Area’, which was published in 2012.
“The Limassol mayor contacted me and asked me to make one just like it for Limassol,” said Papadopoulos.
Papadopoulos has classified the beaches into three categories. The blue flag beaches, which meet strict criteria for water quality, safety and provision of services, also include full facilities such as a lifeguard and beach services. The second category is supervised beaches with umbrellas and some facilities; the third are unsupervised and offer no services. Among these are some ‘secret beaches’, which are not visible from the road.
Other useful information also includes whether a beach is kid-friendly, if it is accessible to the disabled, and whether it is known for its water sports activities. Papadopoulos even rates beaches according to how romantic they are.
The book also provides information on Limassol’s four main archaeological sites; the ancient kingdom-towns of Amathus and Kourion and the castles of Limassol and Colossi as well as information on where turtles can be found.
Each entry described is accompanied by aerial and ground photos of beaches.
The book launch accompanied by an exhibition of some of the photos is taking place on Tuesday, June 24 at 7.30pm at the Carob Mill in Limassol and will be opened by Communications and Works Minister Marios Demetriades.
The exhibition will continue at Limassol Castle until July 6.
The 100 page book, which is published in Greek, English and Russian, can be found in bookstores and convenience stores. The hardback costs €20 and the softback €15.
The book launch and photo exhibition is under the auspices of the Commerce, Industry and Tourism ministry in cooperation with the Limassol Tourism Development and Promotion Company. It is sponsored by Hellenic Bank and the Women’s International Shipping and Trading Association and is supported by Limassol Municipality and CYMEPA.
