APOEL clinch title

By Iacovos Constantinou

A goal on the stroke of half-time by Irishman Cillian Sheridan was enough to give APOEL their second consecutive title in one of the most hotly contested championships in recent years where the winner was decided in the very last game.

In a scrappy game riddled with niggling fouls and poor passing chances were far and few between with AEL the better side in the first half. The only real chance of the half fell to Ibdandelay who was unable to connect properly with the ball with only Pardo to beat.

And just when the coaching staff from both sides were getting ready for their half-time pep talk APOEL took the lead as Sheridan calmly slotted the ball past Fagrouch who only managed to parry Vinicius’s strike in a rare APOEL attack.

In the second half, and with the result in their favour APOEL sat deep and gave plenty of possession to AEL who were however unable to break down a resolute APOEL rearguard. Pardo saved bravely at the feet of AEL’s Dede in the final minutes but that was all AEL could offer offensively.

This was APOEL’s third trophy of the season after winning the Super Cup at the beginning of the season and the Cup ten days ago.
