‘Act responsibly,’ young Britons told

The British High Commission (BHC) on Friday launched a campaign whose objective is to encourage young Britons holidaying on the island to act responsibly.

Dubbed Holiday Hangover, the campaign targets youths holidaying in the popular resort of Ayia Napa, hoping to encourage them to have a good time but act responsibly at the same time.

“The Consular staff in Nicosia met with tour operators prior to the start of the season to explain the campaign and the support that we can provide to British tourists who find themselves in distress whilst on holiday on the island,” Vice Consul Christina Smith said.

Each year, the consular section in Nicosia deals with a number of cases where young people drink heavily, get involved in fights, or have accidents on quad bikes.

Many result in tragic consequences.

“Every year we see the tragic consequences of young people who drink excessively whilst on holiday. We want young people to come to the island and have a great time; the campaign is designed to try and make them more aware,” Smith said.

She said the BCH continues to work closely with the Ayia Napa municipality and other partners to get the message through.

In particular, the campaign stresses the importance of knowing the consequences of the actions should people overdo their activity during the summer.

Through a series of posters and wrist bands, it also promotes the emergency number 112.
