Government to tackle animal welfare

By Constantinos Psillides

A meeting aiming at the establishment of committee for the protection and well-being of animals will take place at the presidential palace on Tuesday, chaired by the head of the president’s office Panayiotis Antoniou.

According to an announcement, the meeting follows a previous one where activists put forth a number of ideas that had to do with animal welfare, including establishing a special police unit force.

Present at the meeting will be the Commissioner of Volunteerism and NGOs Yiannakis Yannaki, the Environment Commissioner Ioanna Panayiotou, representatives of the veterinary services, the interior ministry and various municipalities.

The meeting comes after a string of animal abuse cases last December and January this year. Cases including a man tying his dog on his car and dragging it to death and a kennel that let its dogs starve to death.
