Swindler brothers jailed for 5 months

A LAWYER and his brother were sentenced to five months in prison by the Nicosia District Court, for contempt of court having issued cheques in a previous case and then blocking payment.

According to a police report, the two brothers, who own a shipping company, bought a €214,000 boat but only paid €120,000 for it. When the seller asked for the rest of the money, the two brothers issued cheques for €60,000 but later blocked payment.

The two brothers had been ordered by a previous court decision to settle their debt but had only proceeded to pay €5,000 of the total sum owed.

When the case reappeared at the district court, the judge reprimanded the brothers for being “uncooperative” and “unrepentant” and ordered for their incarceration.

The brothers argued that they were suffering from financial difficulties due to the economic crisis but the court rejected their argument.

Their shipping company is also expected to be fined.
