Peyia looks forward to wedding boost in 2014

A total of 650 civil marriages took place in Peyia in 2013 according to the municipality’s marriage coordinator Maria Yiangou.

She said that Peyia was one of the most popular destinations for civil marriages, bringing in substantial money to municipality coffers although she did not possess exact figures.

Yiangou added that it was British and Russian couples who mad up the majority of those opting for civil weddings. Romanian couples and some couples from the United States were also among those who chose Peyia as their destination to marry in a civil wedding.

The marriage coordinator said that the municipality had made a concerted efforts to promote Peyia both abroad and within Cyprus. Yiangou added that Peyia Municipality had participated in a number of wedding exhibitions in the UK in recent years.

“Next year we expect the percentage of civil marriages to increase by 20 per cent and for 2015 we have already received some bookings already. We have already received 400 bookings for civil weddings for 2014, mainly from British couples,” she said.

She added that the area is ideal for civil weddings as Peyia has been transformed into a beautiful tourist destination, with many foreign nationals choosing it as a place of permanent residence.

“Civil marriages take place in certain areas, not at the town hall necessarily, like hotels, villas and on the beautiful Coral Bay beach and the famous and unique ‘Vrysis ton Peyiotisson’,” she said.

Yiangou added that the municipality’s efforts would continue as it attempts to attract more couples from all around the world.
