Mayor in hot water over tampering accusations

YERMASOYIA mayor, Andreas Gavrieides will appear before the Limassol district court on January 15, accused of tampering with the water meter in his house.

Gavrilidis was to appear at court yesterday but claimed through his lawyer that he was ill. The court accepted the reasoning and rescheduled the hearing for January 15.

The mayor is accused of tampering between the months of January and June 2013.

According to the police report, two members of the public reported the case.

The mayor told Cyprus Mail that he was innocent, adding that in the end justice would prevail. “I feel innocent, I did not have anything to do with this case,” he said.

The mayor’s legal troubles have rocked the municipality, with AKEL counselors repeatedly asking him to step down.
