Arrest for impersonating mayor

Police on Tuesday arrested a 38-year-old man suspected of impersonating a mayor to swindle people out of money.
Larnaca police spokesman Charalambos Zachariou said, “it appears that in the last few days, the 38-year-old would call unsuspecting citizens in Larnaca presenting himself as the Aradippou mayor Evangelos Evangelides”.
Zachariou said the 38-year-old allegedly requested money from those he called, supposedly to help a poor family.
The case came to light after complaints submitted by citizens to the police.
According to the police spokesman, the 38-year-old confessed to the charges of impersonation and attempted extortion under false pretences.
The man was due to be released last night, to be called at a later date for trial.
