President briefs EU Ambassadors on Cyprob

President Nicos Anastasiades briefed on Monday the Ambassadors of EU member states on developments in the Cyprus problem.

According to sources, the President pointed out the need to agree the basis of the talks before the start of any negotiations begin on the Cyprus problem, stressing that talks cannot take place for the sake of talks.

He explained to the European diplomats that the solution must be in line with Cyprus’ capacity as an EU member state and it should also incorporate the principles and values ​​through an enhanced EU role in the negotiating process.

President Anastasiades referred to the package of proposals tabled which includes, among other things, the return of Varosha.

The negotiators of the Greek Cypriot and the Turkish Cypriot communities have been engaged in talks for several weeks now with a view to concluding a joint statement, acceptable to both community leaders, before they embark on direct talks, expected to resume in the coming weeks.
