Applications for domestic photovoltaic systems near 1,600

A TOTAL of 1,591 households have applied to install small renewable energy facilities, as part of a government scheme to help vulnerable groups, the Energy Minister has said.

Giorgos Lakkotrypis said 600 applications for photovoltaic systems have already been approved and a further 200 are expected to get the green light within the coming days. Lakkotrypis said that in order to meet their target of 2,000 installations, they were looking to open up applications to include also single-parent families on income criteria.

The net metering scheme allows consumers to install small photovoltaic systems, drawing electricity as normal but paying the difference between what is fed back into the system via their installed renewable energy source system. Vulnerable households were eligible to apply up to October 18 for a subsidy of €900 per one installed kilowatt up to 3kW. This covers about half of the initial investment cost.

The EAC has offered to help offset the remainder of investment costs for some 200 households.
