Tourist drowns in Paphos

A 53-year-old Russian tourist drowned on Friday while swimming in the sea between Kissonerga and Chloraka, in the Paphos district.

Police said the incident happened at around 9am, 50 metres from the coast.

The man was swept by the waves as strong winds blew in the area.

A marine police inflatable boat dispatched to assist the man capsized, slightly injuring an officer.

The tourist was pulled out of the sea and rushed to hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

The injured officer was treated for abrasions but was kept in hospital for further checks, police said.
